National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian Government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. NSS was established in Gandhiji’s Centenary year in 1969 aimed at developing student’s personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges and Universities. It was recognized that the country could not progress in a desired direction until the student youth are motivated to work for the upliftment of the villages/communities. Therefore, for the national reform and rebirth it was believed to be appropriate that the students and teachers should be properly informed and utilized for strengthening the Indian society as a whole with a particular emphasis on rural community. As a result, student youth, teachers and the community are considered as the three basic components of the National Service Scheme. And, the teachers and students contribute in the nation-building activity through community service.
